The American Legation in Tangier is the only American historical monument on foreign soil. Today it is a museum full of history and legends about the city and its international period. It was here that the author and composer Paul Bowles died in 1999 at age 88. During your visit, you are sure to be won over by the place’s special atmosphere, its architecture, both eastern and western, combining a Mauresque patio, moucharabiehs, huge open rooms and European furnishings.

The American Legation has an entire area called the Paul Bowles Wing, a rich collection of orientalist works, rugs, period furniture, and 18th century mirrors, and exhibits a number of antique works, postcards and engravings. There is also the billionaire, Malcom Forbes’, famous and surprising collection of lead soldiers.
